The Hawk-Family annoys the hell out of me. I really like them (especially Carter, Shayera and Kendra), but they have way too many retcons to their history trying to tie them together, tear them apart and tying them together with other heroes (That Bat-Clan/Hawk-Clan stuff in DKM, for example). Personally, I would just keep them separate like this:

* The Gen 1 Hawks are on the JSA, while the Gen 2 Hawks are on the JLA.

* The Gen 1 Hawks fight Mystical & Mythological Threats and are Earth-Based, while the Gen 2 Hawks fight Intergalactic Threats and Alternate between Earth and Space.

* The Gen 1 Hawks are firmly in love (Kendra and Carter are friends/family, not lovers), while the Gen 2 Hawks were in love, but began to fall for other people as time went on.

* The Gen 1 Hawks get along best with the Flash-Family and The Magic Community, while the Gen 2 Hawks get along best with the Green Lanterns, The Palmer Research Team and Superman's Family.

* The Gen 1 Hawks are basically the same as the classic designs, while the Gen 2 Hawks are more alien-looking, with slightly avian-shaped skulls, hair-like crests, very thin light feathery coating (in place of body hair) and organic, bird-like wings. This is easily the most controversial idea here, but I personally think one of the reasons the Hawk-Family suffers is that Carter & Katar/Shiera and Shayera look very similar, which makes it easy for people to mix them up and get even more confused by their mythology, plus I like aliens to look actually alien (unless it's a Kryptonian, in which case I'm willing to make an exception), so it's a big win all around here.

...and have the following similarities connecting them:

* While the context behind their stories may be very different, both of them feature a mixture of Action, Adventure and Romance.

* The male Hawks share a dislike for Oliver Queen, though Carter less so than Katar, while the female Hawks have friendly relationships with both versions of Black Canary.

* Katar and Carter/Shiera and Shayera are connected, as the former are "remnants" of the latter from when they were initially cursed, but their connection is weaker and much closer to just a slightly exaggerated attraction.

* Both Hawks share similar abilities and arsenals, though each Hawk has their preferred weapon for the sake of variety and easy identification in battle sequences, and the two Generations have their respective power differences (Thanagarian Hawks can survive in a vacuum for five minutes, communicate with all forms of avian life and have natural flight capabilities while the Cursed Hawks don't have any of that, but they can speak thousands of languages, are effectively immortal (unless the curse is broken somehow) and have numerous mystical connections).

There, that should be just enough to make them stand out from each-other whilst keeping them somewhat connected and satisfying the fans of both factions of the Hawk-Family Fandom.

Sorry about all that; Like I said, the Hawks frustrate me a lot, as they shouldn't be that complicated, but DC somehow made a simple concept like "Shirtless Guy and Clothed Partner With A Shared Ancient Egyptian Origin Story" and "Space Cops With Wings" convoluted enough to rival the entirety of the X-Men's manic history.
